As you look forward to college, you start to investigate different career options. Maybe you’ve been involved with music ensembles throughout your school years, or possibly prior to that. Have you given any thought to a career in music? If not, take a look at the potential for a very rewarding future.

The job market for musicians is extremely competitive, but the effort to break into the industry will be worth it. Not only will you learn a lot about the music business, you will also learn a lot about your abilities as a musician. Even as a musician, you don’t have to become a performer–there are plenty of other paths you can take.

Besides being a performer, careers in the music industry can take the form of a sound or broadcast engineer, an agent for other musicians (performers, generally), a composer, or a precision instrument or equipment repairer. These careers are usually more accessible for newcomers than that of performer. If you are concerned about not having a job after graduation, keep a few things in mind.
